This week's reads
Agency by William Gibson: this is the sequel to the Peripheral, and I don't think it's as strong a book. In part because there was less clever worldbuilding to unravel as we're already familiar with the setting, and in part because the "past" part of the book is set in an altered 2020 for a book that came out in 2020, so the alterations to the timestream don't require unpacking. But mostly because it feels very much like a middle book in a trilogy. Still, mid range Gibson is very very good.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien: yes, I know, you've probably all read it. But it does the soul enormous good to take it down, push aside all your memories of the movies (live and animated) and spend a day rereading it. It's a story told with a distinctive 'telling you a tale' voice, with asides and jokes and wisdom, meant for the child inside you. It rewards rereading.
